SYNOPSIS
Comedy
1 man, 3 women
Julia came to New York to see the sights, but all her mother wants to do is watch the ball drop in Times Square. To complicate her problem, the hotel room is haunted. But maybe the ghost could help her out...
JULIA
She didn’t see you.
GHOST
Of course not, I’m a ghost. Did you forget already?
JULIA
But I can see you.
GHOST
I’m only visible to certain people.
JULIA
Well that’s helpful.
GHOST
But that’s half the fun.
JULIA
You’re worried about having fun?
GHOST
Isn’t everyone?
JULIA
You’re spending eternity trapped in a hotel room until you make someone happy, and you’re concerned about your own self-satisfaction? No wonder you’re still here.
GHOST
I’m sure you can imagine how boring it can be.
JULIA
Maybe I heard wrong, but I didn’t think that that’s what you were put here for. In fact, wasn’t it your own self-satisfaction that got you punished in the first place?
GHOST
I was a bit of a scumwad…
JULIA
You were an asshole is what you were.
GHOST
Hey! Don’t use that language with me.
JULIA
But am I right?
GHOST
Well, maybe you understated it.
JULIA
Besides, you said you only appear once a year.
GHOST
True, I don’t get many chances.
JULIA
(Sitting back on the couch)
So, what are you going to do for me?
GHOST
Do for you? I have to make one person truly happy, but I never said it had to be you.
JULIA
I’m as good a person as any.
GHOST
True, true.
(MRS. CLEARY is heard approaching, calling “Julia!”)
JULIA
You want to make me truly happy?
(MRS. CLEARY enters from hall, carrying two cans of soda. JULIA whispers to GHOST)
JULIA (Cont’d)
Get me out of here!
(She rises and crosses to door-wall)
MRS. CLEARY
So, Julia, did you think about it?
JULIA
About what?
MRS. CLEARY
About what we’re doing tonight?
JULIA
Oh, that. Yes, well, um, I’ve been a little busy.
MRS. CLEARY
(Offering a can)
I bought you this.
JULIA
I’m not thirsty.
MRS. CLEARY
I’ll put it here if you want it later.
(She puts the can on the coffee table and opens hers)
JULIA
(To GHOST)
Do you want it?
GHOST
You’ve got to be kidding.
MRS. CLEARY
(To JULIA)
No, thanks, I’ve got this one.
JULIA
Oh, no, I meant… never mind.
