JASON
Didn’t you make me a sandwich?

MAE
Did I say I would?

JASON
Well…

MAE
I distinctly remember saying that I was going to make myself a sandwich. I didn’t say anything about getting you anything.

JASON
Well I just thought that since you were in there…

MAE
That’s what you get for thinking, isn’t it?

JASON
But I –

MAE
– Hey, no talking. I thought you had a song to write.

JASON
Yeah, but –

MAE
– One more “but” and you get yours kicked.

JASON
Oh, the rough stuff. And I thought you weren’t thinking dirty.
(She gives him a disapproving look)

MAE
You’re just asking for it, buster.

JASON
I know. I’ve been asking for it for the last few minutes already.

MAE
You just don’t give up, do you?

JASON
I’m persistent. But you knew that. You told me my persistence is what attracted you to me.

MAE
No, what I said was that you asked me out so much that I would go out with you just to shut you up.

JASON
And persistence wins again.

MAE
Yeah, well, not this time.

JASON
Please?

MAE
Get back to writing your song.

JASON
But I can’t remember where I was.

MAE
Ah, well, that’s your problem, isn’t it?

JASON
Yeah, but –

MAE
– What did I just say about the “buts?” Now, you don’t have to write a song. I just thought it was a sweet gesture.

JASON
What else would be?

MAE
Well, you could get me flowers.

JASON
Flowers? Would that be enough?

MAE
No, but it’s a start.

JASON
I’m looking for something bigger than that.

MAE
Okay, how about jewelry? An emerald necklace? Ruby earrings? Diamond bracelet? Maybe a nice, big, gaudy ring?
(JASON shakes his head slowly)
Well then, you can buy me a new outfit. Something summery that I could wear out to a nice dinner or a club.

JASON
What if I don’t know what a “summery” outfit looks like?

MAE
How can you not know? What kind of man are you?

JASON
A straight one.

MAE
Nice stereotype.

JASON
What?

MAE
Do you think that only gay men know what “summery” means?

JASON
Name one straight guy who does.

MAE
Dennis Meglon.

JASON
Dennis? I thought he was gay anyway.

MAE
Well, he’s not.

JASON
How do you know?

MAE
What do you mean, how do I know? I just know, is all.

JASON
Did you sleep with him?
(The phone rings)

MAE
Oh my God!
(She crosses to the phone)

JASON
Answer the question!

MAE
I have to answer the phone! Get back to your song!
